PROFILE - Nirupama Sheth

Nirupama started her musical journey at a tender age of 5 yrs in Gondal, Saurashtra. A natural born singer she soon graduated from singing for local programs and festivals to representing Gondal at state level, winning many trophies and medals. Her educational journey brought her to the big city of Mumbai (then Bombay), where she started studying in Wilson College. Here also her immense talent and melodious voice were soon recognized. She won several contests, competition etc. for her college, amongst the prestigious being THE GREAT CARUZO CONCERT. Her immense popularity gave her the nickname of ‘Nightingale of Wilson’ (Kokil Kanthi- voice of a nightingale).

Soon she became a major part and lead singer of ballets composed by late Shri ‘Avinash Vyas’. She was a constant feature at AIR and a regular singer with great music directors like Shri Bhanubhai Thaker, Shri Ajit Merchant, Shri Dilip Dholakia, Shri Ninu Mazumdar etc. Her consistent rise in the field of music was duly noted by the stalwarts of music industry and she was deservedly ‘singed up’ as an exclusive artiste of HMV.

It is during this ‘musical journey’, that she met her husband Shri Ajit Sheth, when they sang a memorable duet ‘Ghanshyam Gagan’ composed by Shri Ajeet Merchant which they sang in 1956 which brought them together in bonds of matrimony.
